ProceedingsPro059Assessment of concrete permeability in tunnels Title: Assessment of concrete permeability in tunnels Abstract: The new Subway line under construction in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, lays across clay soils rich in subsoil water, with up to 30 meters of water head. Project involves the stabilization of excavation with shotcrete followed by a concrete lining for tunnels and cast in place concrete for the train stations. During construction, concern arose about the actual permeability of concrete, paramount to assure water-tightness and durability of structures. A mayor survey was launched, using the Torrent Air Permeabilimeter (Swiss Standard SIA 262/1-E), to assess "in situ" concrete air permeability of linings and stations. This paper offers a review of the work carried out, the interpretation of test results and the measures undertaken to improve concrete permeability during construction, based upon test results. This approach can be considered an example of the information that can be obtained from the test method, and how this information could be used to improve concrete quality during construction.
