Abstract: In 2005 a new RILEM Technical Committee 215-AST, In-situ Assessment of Structural Timber, was established with the goals of bringing together leading scientists and practitioners in the field of in-situ evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of existing structural wood members. The State-of-the-art report describing existing and emerging technologies and methods was prepared and is being published by RILEM. An international workshop on education and research in evaluation of historic timber and masonry took place in 2006 during which current and future developments were discussed.
This paper summarizes major work done by the RILEM committee including the review of the state-of-the-art report and outlines the major issues related to in-situ evaluation of structural timber.
