ProceedingsPro070Proposal of effective concrete cover in consideration of deterioration by internal cracking Title: Proposal of effective concrete cover in consideration of deterioration by internal cracking Abstract: Internal cracking deteriorates the tightness of a cover concrete and might promote the ingress of materials corroding a steel bar. In this study, air permeability and chloride ions penetration tests were conducted to evaluate the deterioration in the tightness of a cover concrete due to internal crack around a deformed tension bar. Clearly, the air permeability coefficient of concrete with internal crack depends on the stress of the reinforcing bar and the ratio of concrete cover to bar diameter, and the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions also becomes large with the generation of internal cracks. For cover concrete with internal cracks to continue to function as well as concrete cover without internal cracks, it is necessary to increase the cover’s thickness as much as the width of the internally cracked zone.
