ICNF 2017 - 3rd International Conference on Natural Fibers, Braga, Portugal - From 21 June 2017 to 23 June 2017

Theme:

Natural fibres are a renewable resource, par excellence, having been renewed by nature and by humans for millennia. Recently, they have drawn tremendous attention of both scientific community and industrial sectors due to their abundance and low cost, good specific mechanical properties and environmental benefits. Tremendous growth in the use of non-renewable and non-biodegradable synthetic materials and associated emission of green-house gases is presently a big concern for the environment and future generations. In this context, the use of natural fibres, extracted from plants which absorb carbon dioxide and benefit the environment, seem to be highly attractive. In addition, processing of natural fibres generates wastes, which are mostly organic and can be used to generate electricity or green building, and at the end of its life cycle, they are 100% biodegradable.
Due to the increasing environmental concern and depletion of non-renewable resources, natural fibres are greatly enlarging its range of applications in different industrial sectors including automobiles, sports, architecture, design and many others. Consequently, extensive technological and scientific research and developments are being undertaken by various institutes around the world, turning these amazing materials into eco-friendly value added products and stepping towards a greener world.
The path of the revaluation of natural fibers goes through the improvement of its production sectors, the continuous deepening of scientific knowledge in this area, new marketing strategies and indelibly, the generation of products based on natural fibers.
Following up the great success of ICNF2013 and ICNF2015, covering the topics, “Sustainable materials for advanced applications” and “From nature to market”, ICNF2017 will focus on “Advanced Materials for a Greener World”, aiming to explore the potential of natural fibres to build a Greener World for the future generations. To fulfil this important goal, along with the scientific sessions, Natural Fibrenamics Award contest will be organized to promote and show new innovative natural fibre based products from all over the world.
ICNF2017 - Advanced Materials for a Greener World, to be held in Braga, Portugal, aims to be the meeting point for everyone interested in these fantastic materials called natural fibers.

SHCC 4 - Strain-hardening cement-based composites, Dresden, Germany - From 18 September 2017 to 20 September 2017

Theme:

SHCC4 Conference is the follow-up of three previous successful international events in Stellenbosch (South Africa, 2005), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil, 2011) and Dordrecht (The Netherlands, 2014), all of them focusing on strain-hardening cement-based composites and other types of advanced fibre-reinforced concrete materials such as textile reinforced concrete (TRC) and high-performance fibre-reinforced cement-based composites (HPFRCC). All these new materials exhibit pseudo-ductile behavior resulting from the formation of multiple, fine cracks when subject to tensile loading. The use of such
types of fibre-reinforced concrete could revolutionise the planning, development, dimensioning, structural and architectural design, construction of new and strengthening and repair of existing buildings and structures in many areas of application.

Contributions to the conference are expected to cover the latest findings and research works related on SHCC, TRC and HPFRCC. They may be within – but are not limited to – the following topics:
- Material design and manufacturing;
- Mechanical properties and test methods;
- Structural design and performance.

Final Conference of RILEM TC 253-MCI: Microorganisms-Cementitious Materials Interactions, Toulouse, France - From 25 June 2018 to 26 June 2018

Theme:

RILEM Technical Committee 253-MCI - Microorganisms-Cementitious Materials Interactions (2013-2018), aims to achieve concerted approaches and comparisons of research outcomes in order to move toward a better understanding of the phenomena and furthermore, to standardization (for example, of test methods due to the real shortfall in this domain) and/or certification.

This two-day conference (25-26 June 2018) will focus on the main following topics, in 4 sessions:
- Topic 1: Microorganisms-cement-based materials interactions in different contexts: sewers, water treatment, agricultural environments, nuclear waste storage, etc. and the impact on the materials’ properties (biodeterioration) and/or the structures’ performances (durability, safety, etc.)
- Topic 2: Microbial stains on building materials and protection of materials; building materials with improved bio-receptivity (vegetal walls, reefs, etc.)
- Topic 3: Proliferation of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) on building materials in indoor conditions and health issues.
- Topic 4: Bacteria-based engineering protective systems for cementitious materials (biodeposition, bacteria-based self-healing systems, etc.)
For all these topics, presentations on mechanisms, durability of materials, test methods, modelling aspects, etc., overview of economic/, will be welcome
