Honors and Awards 2017

  • The 2017 Robert L’Hermite Medal was awarded to Ueli Angst, ETH Zürich, Switzerland. He gave a lecture on « Corrosion in construction» on Thursday 7 September. For the first time, the lecture was live webcasted. But if you missed it, no worry!  The video is available on YouTube.

The call for applications for the 2018 Robert L'Hermite medalist was sent out earlier this month (along with the Gustavo Colonnetti medal call for applications).   • The 71st RILEM Annual Week was also the occasion to award Honorary membership and Fellow members.

RILEM attributes the honorary title of RILEM Honorary Member to Senior Members having rendered exceptional services to the association. This year in Chennai, India, Manfred Partl from EMPA received the RILEM Honorary Membership in recognition of his commitment to RILEM in general and his dedicated role in reaching out to the Asphalt Pavement Association on behalf of RILEM. He received his award from Johan Vyncke, RILEM President during the Annual RILEM Banquet on Wednesday 6 September 2017.

2017 Fellow members are:

  • Dubravka Bjegovic, in recognition of her RILEM work on key performance indicators and concrete durability at large.
  • Hervé Di Benedetto,  in recognition of his work, amongst others, in the field of bitumen.
  • Esperanza Menendez Mendez, in recognition of her commitment to RILEM Technical Committee activities.
  • Hirozo Mihashi, in recognition of his work on fracture mechanics and fibre reinforced concrete in the context of RILEM.
  • Mohammed Sonebi, in recognition of his engagement in RILEM Technical Committees, and efforts as Regional Convener for Middle-East and North Africa.
  • Enric Vasquez, in recognition of his work, amongst other, related to recycling of materials.
  • In Chennai, RILEM implemented for the first time ever the Best Student Poster Award which is to be given at every RILEM Annual Week conference.

The award is given at the conference to a student who has a poster and is present at the conference to present/explain the work. The selection is made by a jury chosen by the RILEM Honorary President. The awardee receives a diploma from the Technical Activities Committee Chair at the plenary session of the conference and a cash award of 500 euros.

Ms. Sripriya Rengaraju, Phd Scholar advised by Prof. Radhakrishna G Pillai, IIT Madras, was the first student to win the RILEM Best Student Poster Award for 2017 for her work on "Challenges in Determining the Chloride Threshold of Steel Embedded in Cementitious Systems". She received the diploma from Nicolas Roussel, TAC Chair at the plenary session of the conference on Thursday 7 September 2017.
