Abstract:
Precracking of cement treated layers, as a measure to control reflective cracking, was used for the first time in Spain in 1984. Upt to now this technique has been applied to a length of two-lane carriageway close to 300 km. A the beginning joints were sawn, but since 1991 wet-forming of joints has been the only method employed.

A first evaluation of the performance of several precracked sections was presented with occasion of the previous Conference on Reflective Cracking in Pavements, held in Maastricht (The Netherlands) in 1996. The present paper is devoted to the evolution of these sections during the last three years. The results confirm the effectiveness of wet-formed joints every 2.5 to 4 m, with an important reduction in deflections and remarkable values of load transfer. Therefore, it is concluded that precracking by means of wet-formed joints at short distances should be compulsory in cement treated bases.
