Abstract: In the autumn 1999 CIB', with the support of partner organisations such as CERF, RILEM, IEA and ISIAQ, published the Agenda 21 on Sustainable Construction (CIB Report Publication 237). The Agenda is a sectorial response by the international building and construction community to the international agendas raised by Brundtland, Rio, Habitat II and Kyoto.
This contribution to the conference ILCDES 2000 documents the Conference opening speech and accounts briefly for the arguments for and the process leading up to the Agenda and concentrates on the challenges and R&D issues identified.
A Sustainable Development of our societies must mean a focus on the building and construction sector and the built environment. Proper housing and the necessary infrastructure for transport, communication, water supply and sanifation, energy, commercial and industrial activities to meet the needs of the growing world population pose the major challenge.
The ILCDES 2000 addresses major topics encompassed by the wide concept of Sustainable Construction.
