Abstract: In the paper short information on ISO Technical Committee TC98 is given. The scope of work of TC98 covers basic problems related to design of structures for reliability, irrespective of the structural materials.
TC98 is composed of three Subcommittees: (1) Terminology and Symbols, (2) Reliability of Structures and (3) Loads and other Actions on Structures. The ISO Standards prepared in TC98 are addressed mainly to the national and regional standardization bodies and to other ISO Committees working in the field of building.
The reliability is understood as a combination of safety and serviceability and the design is based on verification of a structure in two respective groups of limit states: ultimate limit states and serviceability limit states. Al1 parameters like loads, material properties and structural dimensions are treated as random variables. Because their statistical distributions are not completely known, the randomness is considered using a system of so called partial
coefficients that are quantified using various methods.
It is believed that rational standardization is a basis for the integrated life cycle design of structures.
