Abstract: The paper relates to comparative life cycle assessment as applied to building systems, and summarizes the cost-in-use information into an integrated system. It considers the benefits of a new steel portal frame system proposed recently for industrial and commercial buildings.
The life cycle assessments of the new steel portal frame building system incorporating the energy efficient sandwich panels for use in industrial and commercial buildings are compared with those of the conventional building system. The improvements in the energy efficiency of industrial / commercial building system using sandwich panels are quantified. Results from life cycle analysis of both the new as well as conventional portal frame building systems are presented. The sensitivity analysis clearly reveals that the new system provides not only an economic solution, but also a better energy-efficient mode1 for commercial / industrial building design in the Australian environment.
