Abstract: Classical procedures for design, construction and use of concrete structures have failed to provide reliable long-term performance of structures exposed to aggressive environments.
One of the most critical factors influencing durability of concrete is its ability to resist penetration of aggressive chemicals. Both permeability and diffusivity are greatly increased once clear pathways through the material are established. This paper outlines the interacting elements of durability and structural design which are necessary to obtain a satisfactory senlice life design, and presents a rational computational framework. A numerical calculation has been carried out based on that framework.
