Abstract: The search for the minimum carbon dioxide embodied in building constructions and emitted directly or indirectly by heating has become the usual scheme for simple environmental optimisations. The relations between quality under real conditions, service life and environmental data are discussed in this paper. In the first part, the effects of construction quality on the resulting thermal transmittance are presented. In the second part, the influence
of built-in moisture in pitched roofs on predicted service life is discussed. Use of simple nenvironmental comparisons is presented in the final part of the paper.
