Abstract: Sealants are used in wet service conditions in a wide variety of building and civil engineering applications.
The problem has been the lack of guidance in sealant standards to assess long-term durability. Short-term quality control tests have an important place but they do not necessarily reflect longer-term needs. This has meant a limited foundation for product development by manufacturers and for selection of durable products by the user.
A recent review is discussed based on practical experience and testing carried out by WRc. General trends in performance are reviewed. The establishment of agreed water resistance and durability tests for sealants is the subject of a further programme of research work. In the absence of suitable end use related standards, the specifier is directed to obtain specific information related to the type of sealant and its intended use.
