Abstract: The average life span of Porous Asphalt (PA) in the Netherlands is currently 11 years. It is mainly determined by the moment that PA needs to be replaced due to an excessive degree of ravelling. Recently RHEI investigated the causes of premature failure (ravelling) in PA on two road sections. These investigations show that the life span of PA is largely determined by the quality of the construction materials used, especially that of the crushed rock and the manufacturing and laying thereof.
