Abstract: This paper describes laboratory testing used to select and derive a non-linear viscoelastic constitutive model for permanent deformation behaviour of asphalt concrete. The model focuses on the shear behaviour. Shear frequency sweep tests were run at various temperature and strain levels. The material behaviour was time, temperature and strain dependent. The temperature and strain dependence were incorporated into the model through vertical and horizontal shifting of the viscoelastic master curves. Results of a finite element simulation are compared with data from an actual laboratory test. These results show that the model captures the permanent deformation behaviour of asphalt concrete fairly well.
