Abstract: A tack coat is applied in order to ensure the correct bond between asphalt layers of the pavement. Nevertheless, in most of the times the adhesion obtained is not controlled. In the Road Laboratory of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), a simple, new procedure named the LCB Shear Test (Laboratorio de Caminos de Barcelona) has been developed. This test assesses the bond between the pavement layers by measuring the shear strength generated by the application of a shear force on the interface between layers. The test procedure, particularly the specimen support system and the process of manufacturing the specimens, has evolved through several phases during development. Tests have been performed at different temperatures, both in dry and wet conditions, in order to verify the resistance of tack coats to the damage caused by water. The same test procedure has been successfully applied as a quality control method in the field using cores cut from the pavement.
