Abstract:
The gradual evolution of the materials properties of a cement-based material is the result of the continuous change of the microstructure with progress of the hydration process. In this paper the results are presented of experimental studies of the evolution of two microstructure-related materials parameters, viz. the dielectric properties and ultrasonic pulse velocity (compression waves). The experimental data are evaluated and compared with the evolution of the materials properties, particularly the modulus of elasticity. In parallel with the measurements numerical simulations of the evolution of the microstructure were executed. It was found that characteristic points of the dielectric and ultrasonic pulse velocity curves coincide well with characteristic point of in the numerically simulated microstructure. The setting time of hardening pastes correlated well with the calculated percolation threshold of the solid phase. It is explained how the evolution of the modulus of elasticity can be formulated as a function of the recorded ultrasonic pulse velocity and of numerically simulated microstructural changes.
