Abstract:
Flocculation of particles is an intrinsic phenomenon in cement systems. It is well known that the particle size distribution and the specific surface area of cement particles exert significant influences on particle flocculation. However, a quantitative relationship re-mains to be established between geometric powder characteristics and cement floccula-tion. A software package with the acronym SPACE was developed for computer simula-tion of cement packing and hydration. Model cements composed of particle systems with different size distribution and/or different specific surface area were generated by SPACE. Average coordination number and mean nearest neighbour distance between particles were adopted to assess the extent of the flocculation phenomenon. The influ-ence was studied of uniformity in size distribution, and of specific surface area of ce-ment particles on coordination number and mean nearest neighbour distance of the model cement. It was revealed that SPACE provides reliable and realistic simulation of cement particles packing. Model cement with lower specific surface area and more uni-form particles size distribution showed lower average coordination number per particle and larger mean nearest neighbour distance.
