Abstract: Self-compacting concrete (SCC) incorporates a high range water reducer (HRWR) and a viscosity-modifying agent (VMA). Welan gum, a high molecular weight polysaccharide manufactured under controlled conditions is a widely used VMA for self-compacting concrete. The study reported in this article deals with the investigation of Hydroxy Propyl Starch (HPS) as an alternative VMA to be used in SCC. Experimental studies were carried out to analyse the performance of HPS at water-powder ratios (by volume) of 0.9, 1.0 and 1.1. The influence of HPS on properties of fresh concrete relating to flow of SCC, setting time and compressive strength was compared with mixtures incorporating Welan gum. Although the dosages of HPS to produce SCC were high, the properties of resultant concrete were comparable to SCC prepared with Welan gum.
