Abstract: This paper presents a summary of recent research carried out at LCPC, Nantes (France), dealing with the controlled production of high-performance and self-compacting concrete. The question of precision of water dosage is first investigated, through an experimental program where a variety of sensors were calibrated, tested and compared. Then, emphasis is put on the power consumption curve of mixers. This classical tool in central-batched concrete production can be treated in a more scientific manner. A stabilization time is quantitatively defined, and taken as a reference mixing time. This stabilization time is controlled partly by the mixer, and partly by the mix-design. Data and models are presented in this respect. Also, the evolution of concrete properties vs. mixing time is studied. It is shown that, when mixing time is lower than the stabilization time, no severe effect is found on any concrete property (including durability). Slump flow and compressive strength (in terms of mean value and standard deviation) are mostly influenced.
