Abstract: A research project was performed aiming at a self-compacting lightweight concrete made with Misapor, an expanded glass. The study started with an optimisation of concrete mixtures aiming at an optimal strength-density ratio. The optimisation study was performed with two packing programs, i.e. the Europack program and the computerised method developed by Dewar. The results obtained with the two methods are compared with each other and also with experimental test results. The mixtures with the optimal packing formed the starting point for the design of self-compacting lightweight aggregate concrete mixtures. Results of the experimental and theoretical study are presented. It will be shown how the application of packing programs can contribute to the reduction of expensive components in the mixture. It was found that stable lightweight aggregate concrete mixtures with Misapor could be made indeed. Cost aspects are briefly dealt with.
