Abstract: Timber has long played a role in buildings both as a load-bearing and as a non load-bearing material. Nevertheless, the specification, the design, the application and the maintenance of timber elements are seldom carried out with the care needed to guarantee their required performance and durability.
This paper describes some conservation problems frequently observed in buildings, related to fungal degradation of timber elements and discusses their origin and some basic procedures to be followed in order to minimize these problems.
