Abstract: Fibre reinforced cementitious (FRC) composites with alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag (AAG) as the sole binder were investigated. The mechanical properties in compression and flexure of the AAG based FRC composites were studied with the focus on the effects of the alkaline concentration and curing temperature. Sodium hydroxide solution was used as an activator and the curing temperature was either room temperature or 65°C. The AAG paste had a compressive strength of 38 MPa at 3-days of room temperature curing using 6 mol/L NaOH solution as the activator. The inclusion of fibres had little effect on the compressive strength. However, the modulus of rupture value of the AAG based FRC composites was 5 times the value of plain AAG paste. Deflection-hardening process and multiple cracking phenomenon typical of the Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) have been clearly observed. Interpretation of this favourable behaviour has been aided using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to observe the morphology of the AAG binder as well as the nature of the fibre/matrix interfacial zone.
