Abstract: This contribution represents an attempt by the writer to review some of the recent history pertaining to delayed ettringite formation and to provide a current assessment. The continued (but shifting) controversy concerning expansion mechanisms is discussed in detail. The writer attempts to marshal evidence that in laboratory studies the seat of the expansion is in fact the ettringite-filled rims that develop around some (but not all) of the siliceous aggregates in laboratory mortars.
