Abstract: In order to adequately protect concrete against frost damage, air bubbles need to remain empty. The issue of air-void filling has recently become of interest as some field examinations of concrete pavements have raised concerns that secondary crystallization of ettringite in microscopic air bubbles may be at the origin of the premature degradation of concrete. The intent of this review is to briefly summarize the available knowledge on the effects, if any, of in-filling of entrained air-voids by ettringite on the durability, and particularly on the frost resistance, of air-entrained concrete mixtures, specifically those used for pavement construction. The various mechanisms that may lead to the deposition of ettringite crystals in air-entrained bubbles are first reviewed. Then, the detrimental effects of air-bubble filling on spacing factor and frost durability are discussed. The last section is devoted to an analysis of internal pressures that may develop in an air bubble upon ettringite crystallization.
