Abstract: The behavior of ordinary concrete and high strength concrete under the attack of ammonium nitrate solutions was studied over a period of more than 10 years. The concrete specimens were immersed in a range of concentrations including 10%, 5%, 1% and 0.1% ammonium nitrate solutions and simultaneously subjected to different bending loads with load levels of 0%, 30%, 40% and 50% of their reference bending strengths. The strength and mass changes of the concrete specimens and the penetration depths of the immersed ammonium nitrate ions into the specimens and the porosity were measured. The influence of load level, quality of concrete and concentration of the solution on the process of the corrosion of the concretes was studied and is discussed on the basis of experimental observations.
