Abstract: After more than a hundred years of relevant research and attempts at implementation, durability still is not an intimate part of the construction industry's "culture", certainly not in all countries of the Western Hemisphere. While the technical reasons for lack of durability and the relevant remedies are mostly well known, development of improved standards and enforcement of existing codes and specifications remain inadequate. To improve this situation in North America and Europe, technical education needs to be brought into the 21st Century, research has to be re-focused to technically and economically relevant problems, the professionalism of technical and standardization organizations needs to be elevated, and the construction industry needs to accept its responsibilities to the customer.
