Abstract:
In order to avoid heavy interventions for strengthening of bridge deck slabs, the potential of Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete with reinforcing bars (= R-UHPFRC), shall be exploited. By adding a thin (30 to 50 mm) layer of R-UHPFRC on top of the deck slab, the fatigue resistance and load carrying capacity may be restored and increased to meet safety and utilisation requirements.
This paper presents results of fatigue tests for the determination of the fatigue behaviour of slab-like beams in composite construction (made of R-UHPFRC and reinforced concrete (RC)). The experimental results show a high fatigue resistance of composite R-UHPFRC – RC member indicating a significant potential for fatigue strengthening of RC bridge deck slabs with R-UHPFRC. For the application, rules are deduced for the structural design of the R- UHPFRC layer and the corresponding fatigue safety verification.
Finally, an application of this novel technology is briefly described demonstrating that strengthening of bridge deck slabs using R-UHPFRC is a relatively gentle intervention.
