Abstract: Buried joints applied to roadway viaducts provide not only a comfortable ride but also a noiseless and vibrationless environment. A buried joint can be regarded as one of the crack prevention systems used in asphalt pavements. The grid-panel type of buried joint was developed in Japan where it is widely used. The objective of this study is to show the validity and effectiveness of the buried joint system for long-span bridges. This paper describes the basic concept of the system and the mechanism of the strain dispersion function. Field measurement taken on an actual bridge deck with busy traffic as well as laboratory evaluation tests for the materials used are also presented. From the results of the measurement and evaluations, this study has confirmed that the grid panel and sliding sheets are crucial in using this kind of buried joint to disperse the strain that converges at the expansion gap of a bridge deck.
