Abstract: This paper presents a unique relationship found between binder rheology and the presence of cracks observed on some major trunk roads in the United Kingdom. The Viscous to Elastic Transition (VET) temperatures and the respective complex stiffness moduli (at this temperature) of binders recovered from site cores have been mapped against site observations; the respective properties of binders recovered after a laboratory ageing-durability procedure were also presented for comparison. This "mapping" method revealed a distinctive distribution and localisation of materials with different performance. The method is considered a useful preliminary screening tool for identifying the potential crack susceptibility of bituminous binders, and may also be a useful device during forensic investigation (failure mode examination).
