Abstract: Asphalt pavements with earthquake-induced cracks and those repaired subsequently by various measures were evaluated. Based on the results, an efficient method for urgently repairing earthquake-induced cracks in airport asphalt pavements was developed.
Structural evaluations were performed with a Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) for pavements with or without cracks, and the following findings were obtained.
(1) The structural condition of cracks can be evaluated by the elastic modulus of the component layer back-calculated from the deflections and load transfer efficiency.
(2) Sealing is not an effective repair measure from a structural viewpoint, but both patching and overlay are effective.
As an urgent crack repair method, the system in which the repair material is stored at airports and repair works are conducted easily without requiring larger facilities was developed. The repair material, which is stored in the ready-to-use condition, is injected to seal cracks without cutting around the cracks. Based on both laboratory tests and field investigations, a cold bituminous material, which is advantageous for sealing works, was found to be suitable for repairing cracks.
