Abstract: A new preventive maintenance treatment in asphalt pavements is presented hereby with regards to its physical and functional characteristics. This is based on the cold application of a continuous bituminous strip on small and medium sized pavement cracks. The cold modified bitumen fills and seals the cracks and appears to give some advantages for the pavement system functional conditions. This paper is related with some preliminary laboratory testing carried out on the cold bituminous binder itself, in order to evaluate the "strengthening" power of the crack filling as well as its actual "sealing" effects. Some indirect tension tests were performed on 150 mm diameter samples from a gyratory compactor and on some 100 mm diameter Marshall ones. At the top surface centre of samples prepared for each bituminous mixtures precise cuts were made for reproducing a pavement crack. Cuts were then filled with cold sealant. These tests allowed to work out the sealed cracks indirect tension strength and to compare it with results from tests on not-sealed cracks specimens as well as on intact ones. A second in-situ trial phase was set up later. The purpose was to verify the actual possibility of setting up a new kind of preventive maintenance treatment for asphalt-surfaced pavements and checking the performance features of the new sealant material as laid.
