Abstract: In the Netherlands new forms of contracting demand that contractors design, build and operate a stretch of motorway over a fixed period of time. Contractors as a result need to obtain insight into the technical risks associated with these contracts.
The paper describes a probabilistic fatigue based design procedure that offers insight into these technical risks. The level of insight is of such a detail that the method is of help in deciding which measures have the strongest effect in reducing risks. These measures do not per definition consider adjustment of the structural design (layer thickness). In many cases quality of information may also help to reduce risks (laboratory testing).
