Abstract: The paper proposes a method, called Exp-Ref, to assess the service life of structures exposed to carbonation-induced corrosion, based on two principles: a) measuring on site, nondestructively, two fundamental durability properties: air-permeability and depth of the cover concrete; b) taking as reference the conditions (given in EN Standards for defined Exposure Classes) leading to an expected service life of 50 years. It is claimed that this approach constitutes a starting point for developing more realistic and robust service life prediction models.
