Abstract: A method is described for detecting the chloride concentration in concrete that causes initiation of corrosion (depassivation of the reinforcement) at a certain location in a particular structure. The method is based upon detecting areas where the embedded steel is depassivated (corrosion is initiated) by electrochemical techniques and determining the chloride content of the concrete close to the steel. Areas of depassivation might be found by potential mapping or by corrosion rate measurements on the surface of the concrete structure. The critical chloride content might be found in locations where there are no visible damages but where the electrochemical measurements show that corrosion has been initiated. The chloride content might be determined by use of a chloride profile, by analysing drilled cores or by analysing concrete that is removed by chiselling.
