Abstract: Chloride penetration under a dry-wet condition was evaluated for twenty-three types of concretes of three different common strength levels, which were made of seventeen types of cements. By changing the type of cement, the chloride penetration depths varied significantly. When the content of reactive alumina from cement in the paste, which affects the binding of chloride, is selected as an index, the chloride penetration depth shows good correlation with reactive alumina content for each level of concrete strength regardless of the types of cement. In order to consider the chloride binding of cement for the estimation of chloride penetration, assuming the chloride penetration as a diffusion phenomenon based on the linear relationship between the root of time and the chloride penetration depth, a diffusion coefficient is found to be expressed by the function of the content of reactive alumina and the concrete strength. The concrete strength represents the amount of pores in which chloride ions move. As a result of a regression calculation, the experimental data show a good correlation with the estimated values. This indicates that the chloride penetration in a dry-wet condition can be estimated by using this relationship even when different types of cements are used for various concrete mixes.
