Abstract: In France, maintenance of road surface layers generates approximately two million tons of
reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) a year of which less than 10 % is recycled into road
materials. In this context, a research has been initiated three years ago at LCPC in
collaboration with ATILH to develop recycling of RAP into pavement hydraulic concrete.
In a first part, the paper presents the influence of the replacement rate of natural aggregates
by RAP on compressive strength, tensile strength and elastic modulus of concrete. It shows
that the higher the RAP content the lower the properties.
The second part of the paper is dedicated to fatigue behavior of concrete including RAP.
Fatigue tests realized show these concrete have a specific behavior between that of cement
concrete and of asphalt concrete.
A cracking bench is described in a third part. It showed that no significant difference in
cracking behavior can be observed between two equivalent beams of concrete with 0 and 50
% of RAP.
Based upon these data, the paper concludes on a preliminary design of typical road
structures and on the potential, economical interest of RAP recycling in concrete roads.
