Abstract: During the late XX century a huse Portland cement facility has been producing different
kinds of materials from calcareous stone of the south-western area of Madrid. In 1998 this
factory was definitely close down and a new district was planned in its place. In order to
minimize the out going inert material to rubbish dump that the demolition of the factory
would produce, a full concrete recycling plant was installing inside the project area. Big
pieces of reinforced concrete coming from cement silos, structures and foundations were
treated in a complete crushing mobile facility, allowing iron parts to be retained by an
electromagnetic system, and then being triturated and classified into several sizes of
aggregates. The final material was used in ballast layers of roads and sidewalks and also in
non-structural concrete, in an amount of a hundred of a thousand cubic meters of aggregate.
Performance of the recycled material was excellent, and Madrid’s municipal quality
standards were achieved, resulting in a sustainable application of construction processes.
