Abstract: The use of recycled materials in projects has been flowering in Catalonia in two principal
ways. At first in site approaches have been developed in several infrastructures projects. due
not only to the increased environmental trend but also to the large amount of non-profitable
materials. In the other hand it has been possible to promote the use of certain recycled
products obtained in specific external facilities through modifications of the ongoing project,
resulting in a significant environmental added value.
Both cases are analysed accordingly with several real practical applications that have been
or are taking place in projects in this country: recycling of former road pavements sections
into aggregates through demolition procedures, use of artificial aggregates in street
pavements, valorisation of vegetal waste in gardening projects, recycling techniques in
contaminated areas, and another examples.
Serious research work, high degree of cooperation between public administration,
engineering companies and contractor, and strong environmental commitment were needed in
order to achieve a highly satisfactory result.
