Abstract: Coupled shear wall is one of the widely adopted lateral forces resisting structural scheme for earthquake resistant design. Coupling beam in the coupled shear wall is prone for brittle failure while subjected to earthquake excitation. Numerous research activities are carried out for passive energy dissipation with different types of damping devices for damage mitigation of structures due to earthquake.
Limited studies are reported in literature, on the application of energy dissipation device in the coupling beam of coupled shear wall. Since providing diagonal reinforcement in the coupling beam is a difficult task and replacement of failed coupling beam is tough, as an alternative, shear capacity enhancement of coupling beam by addition of X - Plate Damper (XPD) is proposed in this paper. In the present study, numerical investigations are carried out with four different earthquake ground motions through three dimensional analysis of coupled shear wall with and without XPD at the coupling beam and the shear demand and capacity variations are studied.
