Abstract: Workability of Self-compacting concrete is defined as whether or not concrete is ease to place in process of construction and obtains uniformity of hardened concrete, which generally includes self-compacting, passing capability between reinforcing bars and resistance to segregate. Among the methods evaluating workability of fresh concrete there are lack of a method to evaluate stability of fresh concrete during transportation, placing and till to initial setting phase. In this paper, a test method is developed to assess the stability of fresh self-compacting concrete by testing whether or not concrete has suitable viscosity between matrix and coarse aggregate, whose apparatus mainly consists of a round barrel (115mm in diameter and 100mm in length) with disassemblable three parts and bouncing table with 25±2mm in amplitude of vibration. The viscosity can be obtained indirectly by calculating the percent (or vibrating segregation ration of coarse aggregate fm) of weight difference of fresh concrete filled in top layer and bottom layer of barrel to total aggregate content after the round barrel filled with fresh concrete finished vibration for 25 times on bouncing table. The experimental results show this method have several obvious advantages such as high sensitivity of fm value to parameters of amount of aggregate, water to powder ratio and superplasticizer content, ease operation and good repetition. And the result is well in agreement with that of others methods such as U-box test and L-box test. Furthermore, this method can be used to assess whether or not the ingredients of fresh concrete distribute uniformly during transportation, placing and construction and determine whether or not the fresh concrete possesses excellent self-compacting when vibrating segregation ratio of coarse aggregate fm is less 10%. This shows the evaluating index of fm presented in this paper can exactly reflect passing capability and resistance to segregation of fresh concrete.
