Abstract: This paper discusses the social and economic benefits of self-compacting concrete (SCC) technology. It also compares SCC with normal concrete about the total cost for production of typical structural elements such as beams, columns and hollow-core slabs. The analyses indicate that the direct cost of construction using SCC increased 5% to 10% compared to that using normal concrete according to the current cost estimates. Though the increase of the overall cost is within 5%, the application of SCC to general construction can improve the quality of products, lower the cost of maintenance and improve the structural durability.
