Abstract: Optimization of particle packing density has been accepted as a key concept for mix design of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Methods for calculating packing density can be classified into experimental method, modeling method and computer simulating method. This paper discussed advantages and disadvantages of the three methods and their relevant
applications were presented to provide a scientific basis for selecting calculation methods and promote the development of mixture design methods of UHPC. Experimental methods are easy to follow, but a large amount of tests are needed. Modelling methods can reduce the test numbers of work and trial batches, but its adaptability should be considered first. Computer simulating methods are barely used for mix design of UHPC.
