Abstract: In the light of the considerable amount of construction and demolition waste produced world-
wide and of recent research developments, this document presents a set of recommendations

concerning the use of recycled aggregates for the production of structural concrete. It presents a

set of guidelines explaining the classification of recycled aggregates in different categories de-
pending on their composition and physical properties in accordance with the normalization put

forward by the European Committee for Standardization. This document also presents simple
procedures to adopt during the production of concrete bearing in mind the recycled aggregates’
high-water absorption and thus its negative impact on the workability of concrete over time.
This specification proposal indicates the field of application of concrete containing different

classes of recycled aggregates concerning the target strength and environmental exposure clas-
ses of concrete in accordance with Eurocode 2 - Design of concrete structures. Practical rules

for the prediction of the performance of concrete are also presented depending on the level of

incorporation and characteristics of recycled aggregates, with special emphasis on their influ-
ence on the resulting material’s deformation properties (namely modulus of elasticity, creep and

shrinkage) and its durability properties (carbonation and chloride ion penetration).
