Abstract: Concrete, a structural material in worldwide use, can be deteriorated by autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, cyanobacteria, algae and fungi, which form biofilms on the concrete surface. This paper reviews the microorganisms involved, the structure of the biofilm, the damage caused and some new methods that can be used for the detection of deteriogenic microorganisms. Possible remediation techniques are mentioned.
