Abstract: Geotechnologists contributed significantly in development and construction. Their nature of work and involvement with natural materials, particularly soils are well established. This paper described what geotechnologists knew about nanotechnology and its application. Indeed many of the fundamental aspects and concepts in geotechnology are nano level phenomenon and thus vis-à-vis nanotechnology. Some of these bodies of language have been understood by geotechnologists for many years in the past and unconsciously they are contributing to nanotechnology. In order to fully tap the advantages offered by nanotechnology, these basic elements must first be understood. These include the molecular structure of water and the understanding of why water behave as it is, types of soil moisture/water surrounding the soil particles and its implications, soil-contaminant interaction, related theories and types of bonding, and (nano) characteristics of various soil minerals. The use of nanomaterials for environmental monitoring and clean-up are also discussed in this paper. The number of materials and choice for such applications has been greatly increased with nanotechnology. The inter-relation between nanotechnology, geotechnology and sustainable development are also briefly mentioned to show that nanotechnology play marked role in sustaining depleting world’s natural resources.
