Abstract: This paper presents an investigation into the premature concrete deterioration affecting many reinforced concrete jetties between 5 to 11 years of age in Malaysia. The jetties were designed to comply with BS6349 with a design life-span of about 50 years. The specified concrete cover was between 60mm and 75mm in accordance with the PWD specification. Field condition assessment and a comprehensive material testing plan were carried out on the jetties. Results from material tests showed that the deterioration of concrete is largely caused by chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcements. Lack of in-situ concrete cover has been identified as the main cause of the premature deterioration. The measured in-situ cover data revealed that the mean value is consistently lesser than the specified cover for the jetty. The Level of Confidence in achieving the specified cover is found to be below 50%. In addition, there is a large variability in the in-situ cover results. The service-life of the jetty has been significantly reduced than originally intended due to the inadequacy of in-situ cover.
