Abstract: Internal curing by means of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) is an effectively method to
decrease the self-desiccation of high performance concrete. This paper focus on the water
release process of SAPs in cement pastes at early age, which is an important aspect to
understand the effectiveness of internal curing. In this paper, cement pastes with SAP were
broken, and the particle sizes of the SAP were observed, at certain time intervals, meanwhile,
the water release process was analyzed, according to the variation of the particle size of the
SAPs. The results show that the SAPs starts to release water before initial setting, and, there’s
no obviously interspace between the SAP and cement matrix before final setting.
Furthermore, the diameter of the SAPs becomes to be smaller than that of the surrounding
pore, about 1h after final setting.
