Abstract: This presentation provides an overview of recent advances and application of ultra-high
performance concrete (UHPC) in steel-concrete composite bridges. Two main investigation
methods regarding push-out test and beam test on the structural behavior of steel-UHPC
composite structures are firstly reviewed. Based on existing researches, a new structural
system using large stud shear connectors is proposed to improve the structural performance of
composite structures. Push-out test on the static behavior of large stud shear connectors and
grouped large headed studs in UHPC, and beam test on the flexural and fatigue behavior of
steel-UHPC beams are performed and explicitly introduced. Moreover, an innovative
interface treatment is developed to enhance the structural performance of steel-UHPC precast
bridge deck joint. Experimental and theoretical studies are conducted to investigate the
flexural behavior of UHPC joint using the proposed interface treatment. Lastly, an
engineering application of UHPC on Nanjing Yangtze river fifth bridge, a three tower
cable-stayed bridge locates in Nanjing, China, is detailedly presented and discussed.
