Abstract: The internally cured concrete made with pre-wetted lightweight aggregates (LWAs) has a risk of segregation due to floating of LWAs in the process of vibration. Such risk can be reduced by applying the internal curing in self-compacting concrete (SCC), as it can avoid the
vibration or rodding process. In this study, the internally cured SCC with fine or coarse LWAs was prepared with the replacement level of 20% and 40% by volume of normal weight aggregates. Transport properties (i.e. water absorption, water desorption and chloride resistance) of the internally cured SCC with pre-wetted LWAs were examined. Similarly, the internally cured mortar which has the identical ingredients’ proportion with that of corresponding concrete was used for comparison. The results show that the fine LWAs exhibited a better performance in improving the transport properties compared with the coarse LWAs. The comparison of water absorption test results between mortar and its corresponding
concrete reveals that the increase in the volume fraction of normal weight aggregates may decrease the effectiveness of internal curing.
