Abstract: The use of waste and industrial by-products as concrete aggregates allows the reduction of raw materials and preserves natural resources. More work is needed to investigate the performance of this material under different conditions. The curing process of concrete is a complex process in which different parameters influence its behaviour, such as environmental conditions, type of cement, admixtures or dosage. The quality and durability of cementitious materials depends on the curing process among many others factors.
This paper presents the monitoring with embedded sensors and ultrasonic measurements of the curing process of concrete manufactured with recycled and steel slag aggregates. An embedded strain gauge and two sensor devices designed by the authors to measure temperature and humidity at different positions were employed. The monitoring was made in different moulds, a standard cubic mould and a large prism, trying to simulate a massive mass of concrete at laboratory scale. A specific set of sensors were designed and fabricated to monitor temperature and humidity at different positions by means of a wireless sensor network. In addition, ultrasonic velocity and internal strain were measured during the curing process. For that purpose, different mixes have been analyzed and tested under similar conditions during 28 days.
